Paul Rudd recently shared that he was initially hesitant to take on the role of Josh Lucas, the former stepbrother turned love interest of Cher, in the film “Clueless.”

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Rudd confessed that he initially had his sights set on playing Christian, Cher’s romantic interest who is later revealed to be gay—a part that ultimately went to Justin Walker.

“I remember thinking, ‘Hold on, this character is gay and also the coolest guy in the film?'” Rudd recounted during the interview.

The 57-year-old actor continued, “I’ve never encountered a role like this before, and it seemed to be the most captivating one of all.”

Rudd also mentioned his interest in the character of Murray, Dionne’s boyfriend (played by Stacey Dash), before realizing that the role was intended for a black actor, which led to Donald Faison being cast.

Director Amy Heckerling ended up letting Rudd read for the parts of Christian and Josh. He got the latter role.

However, Rudd wasn’t hellbent on starring in the 1995 film before he was officially cast.

After the audition was done, I was not on the phone with my agents, like, ‘Did I get it? Did I get it?’” he recalled in the interview.

Adam Scott, who went to acting school with Rudd, told the outlet he knew Rudd’s career would blow up once “Clueless” came out.

“I was at the premiere of ‘Clueless’ out in Malibu with him, and it comes up on this big screen on the beach, and immediately I was like, ‘Oh, Paul’s going to be a famous person now,’” the “Severance” star shared.

“And sure enough,” Scott added, “everything changed after that.”
