The Pentagon has recently voiced strong criticism against Netflix, accusing the streaming giant of promoting an “ideological agenda” with the debut of the comedy-drama Boots. The series centers on a young man, who is secretly gay, as he joins his best friend in the U.S. Marines.

Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson, responding to a query from Entertainment Weekly about the show, harshly criticized Netflix, labeling their content as “woke garbage.”

“Under President Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the U.S. military is focused on reinstating the warrior ethos,” stated Wilson. “Our standards are elite and uniform across all dimensions, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, because the demands of military service do not discriminate based on identity.”

He further declared that the administration is steadfast in upholding its standards, in contrast to Netflix, which he claims routinely delivers “woke garbage” to its audience, including children.

Debuting on Netflix on October 9, the eight-part series follows Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, as he embarks on a journey with his best friend to train as a Marine in the 1990s—a period when being openly gay in the military was prohibited. The narrative brings together a diverse cast who form deep connections and explore their identities.

The series is based on the memoir of former US Marine Greg Cope White, The Pink Marine.

This statement from the Pentagon comes after President Trump and Secretary Hegseth delivered a controversial address to a room full of the military’s top commanders, calling for an end to “woke” culture.

Hegseth did not mince his words as he detailed how they would return to a “warrior ethos,” which included getting rid of DEI quotas, ending restrictions on hazing, and strengthening grooming standards as he complained of “fat generals,” per ABC News.

“The era of unacceptable appearance is over,” Hegseth stated, later adding, “Foolish and reckless political leaders set the wrong compass heading and we lost our way. We became the ‘Woke Department,’ but not anymore.”
