Philadelphia Police Ambush Suspect Faces 76 Charges, Held Without Bail

Eric Lewis, the man accused in the ambush shooting that killed a Philadelphia police officer, was arraigned Sunday morning on 76 charges and ordered held without bail, according to court records.

Lewis, 35, faces charges including murder, homicide of a law enforcement officer, attempted murder, 10 counts of attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and other related offenses. His next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 26.

The charges follow a Saturday shooting that claimed the life of Philadelphia Police Officer Shane Seiber and wounded his partner.

Seiber, 40, was a father of two and an Air Force veteran who spent 10 years with the Philadelphia Police Department. He is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter.

“He fought valiantly, but he lost his life today,” Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said at a news conference Saturday. “His wife was able to be by his side before he passed, as well as his family.”

The second officer, a 33-year-old father of five, was shot 12 times and initially remained in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.

The shooting began at about 12:20 a.m. Saturday, when the officers responded to a report of a man carrying a gun. Police said they found an armed man standing on a porch.

As the officers approached the porch, they were met with “significant gunfire,” authorities said.

Additional officers and a SWAT team arrived moments later and discovered both officers on the porch with gunshot wounds.

More shots were fired, leading authorities to declare a barricade situation. Lewis was eventually arrested, according to police.

Police said Lewis had two handguns and a shotgun when he was taken into custody. One of the handguns belonged to an officer wounded in the shooting.

District Attorney Larry Krasner said Saturday that he could not confirm whether Lewis had used the officer’s handgun or explain how he obtained the other weapons.

Krasner also said Lewis’ criminal record did not contain anything that would have legally barred him from obtaining a firearm.

Lewis, who works for the Philadelphia Water Department, has a criminal record dating back to 2012, according to Pennsylvania court records reviewed by Fox News Digital.

The records show Lewis was convicted of theft and receiving stolen property in 2012. In 2013, he was convicted of gun-related offenses and simple assault. He received probation in both cases.

Lewis pleaded guilty in 2018 to disorderly conduct involving fighting and was again sentenced to probation.

Court records also show that Lewis received three traffic citations in 2024, including for driving without headlights, failing to provide proof of insurance and a windshield-related violation.
