INDIANAPOLIS An 18-year-old football player has died following a crash in Fishers, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Sunday.

According to the HSCO, the incident occurred on Saturday around 9:03 p.m. Preliminary investigation shows a white 2016 BMW 340 was heading south on Florida Rd. from 113th St. The HCSO said a silver 2015 Toyota Rav4 was also traveling north on Florida Rd. near Geist Park.

The BMW attempted to pass a southbound car and entered the northbound lane. As the car came over the hill, the HCSO said the driver knew a crash was imminent, pulled to the right to avoid the Toyota and overcorrected.

This caused the Toyota to travel off the east side of the road, hitting a mailbox, the HCSO wrote.

Meanwhile, the BMW slid through the grass, hit a tree and caught on fire. Per the HCSO, the passenger in the BMW was identified as 18-year-old Indianapolis resident Mason Alexander. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Alexander was a graduate of Hamilton Southeastern High School and a cornerback for the University of Pittsburgh’s football team.

In a statement on X, Pitt Football Coach Pat Narduzzi said, “I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life.

“Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing. Mason had just enrolled in Pitt in January following his early graduation from Indiana’s Hamilton Southeastern High School. Even during that short time, he made a great impression on all of us.

“Mason was proud and excited to be a Panther, and we felt the same way about having him in our Pitt family. He will always be a Panther to us. The Alexander family and Mason’s many loved ones and friends will be in our prayers.”

Hamilton Southeastern High School also shared their sentiments for the loss of Alexander. In a statement, they said, “Our school community is mourning the loss of Hamilton Southeastern High School senior Mason Alexander, who died in a car accident this weekend. This tragedy has deeply impacted our students, staff and families.

“Mason was a beloved member of our school community and a multisport athlete, known for his kindness, leadership, and infectious energy.”

Adding onto this, HSE Football Coach Mike Kelly stated, “Mason was a special young man who touched the lives of everyone he met. His smile, presence and energy would light up every room he was in. Our hearts are heavy during this difficult time.”
