The U.S. 17 bridge spanning the St. Marys River, linking Nassau County, Florida, with Georgia, will be temporarily closed each morning through Thursday, December 11.

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla — Motorists who frequently travel on U.S. 17 between Florida and Georgia should be prepared for changes to their usual route.

The iconic blue bridge, a vital connection between Nassau County and Camden County, will be shut down daily from Monday, December 8, to Thursday, December 11, to facilitate essential routine maintenance work.

Although efforts are being made to minimize inconvenience for traditional 9-to-5 commuters, daytime travelers will still face disruptions. The bridge is scheduled to close at 9 a.m. and will reopen at 4 p.m. each day.

As an alternative, drivers are advised to use Interstate 95 to cross the St. Marys River during these times.

The nearly 100-year-old bridge regularly requires closures for maintenance. Built in 1927, the Florida Department of Transportation says it is one of the last manually-operated swing bridges in the state and is still opened with a 15-foot wrench.

In a 2024 inspection by FDOT, it was determined to be in “fair” condition.
