The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is still working to learn the details leading to the woman’s death, and has one person detained for questioning.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) is working to learn the circumstances surrounding a woman’s death after investigators said her body was found covered with a blanket in the backyard of a house Monday morning.
JSO Sergeant Steve Rudlaff said the agency responded to a call for a body found in the backyard of a house at the 1600 block of W. 16th Street around 8:30 a.m. Monday. There, they found the unidentified woman, between 40 and 60 years old, covered with a blanket.
Rudlaff said JSO’s initial investigation found there were two nearby witnesses, one telling police they heard someone screaming, “he’s going to kill me,” around 8 p.m. Sunday. Another witness told police they heard “multiple” gunshots. Neither witness called 911, according to Rudlaff.
Rudlaff said a friend of the person who lives at the house where the woman was found told police she was unable to reach her friend by phone, so she went to the house. She found a large pool of blood and a body in the backyard.
One person outside the house was detained and taken in for questioning, according to Rudlaff, but there have not been any arrests at this time.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call JSO’s non-emergency number at 904-630-0500 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
Editor’s note: This article originally said the two witnesses called 911, and JSO was not dispatched. JSO provided further clarity after this article was published, saying neither witness called 911. This has been corrected.
