PROVIDENCE, R.I. — An active shooter situation unfolded at Brown University on Saturday, prompting a swift response from the police, as reported by the university’s alert system.
Initially, authorities announced that a suspect had been apprehended. However, they later clarified that the search for the suspect or suspects was still ongoing.
The alarming event took place in the vicinity of the Barus & Holley building. This seven-story facility, as detailed on the university’s website, is home to the School of Engineering and the Physics Department, comprising 117 laboratories, 150 offices, 15 classrooms, and 29 specialized labs.
Kristy DosReis, the city’s chief public information officer, indicated that officials were actively gathering details from the scene to understand the unfolding situation better.
Brown University, a prestigious Ivy League institution, serves approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and over 3,000 graduate students, according to its official site.
Saturday was the second day of final exams for the fall semester.
