YORK, Pa. — Update, 4:30 p.m.: Governor Josh Shapiro spoke at UPMC Memorial after a gunman opened fire inside the hospital on Sunday.

The incident began around 10:35 a.m. at UPMC Memorial in York County. Six people were struck or injured by gunfire, including three medical staff members and three police officers, according to state officials. 

West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was shot and killed at the scene.

The shooter has been identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz. He allegedly entered the hospital with a handgun and zip ties. Archangel Ortiz allegedly headed straight to the ICU, where officials said he held several members of the UPMC staff hostage. 

At one point, he reportedly zip-tied a UPMC staff member’s hands together and held them at gunpoint in the hospital’s hallway. That’s when officers opened fire and killed him, they said.

Gov. Shapiro and State Attorney General Dave Sunday affirmed that there was “no doubt” that officers were justified in using deadly force. 

The remaining victims are reportedly in stable condition. 

Update, 2:30 p.m.: A York County police officer was reportedly killed after a gunman opened fire inside UPMC Memorial. 

“Our West York Borough family is suffering a painful loss today in response to a tragic mutual aid call earlier today in West Manchester Township at UPMC. Our hearts break at the innocent loss of life,” the borough wrote on Facebook. 

West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte was reportedly killed at the scene of the active shooting.  

“We ask that the community come together in solidarity, respect and prayer at this time as broken hearts mourn. You are welcome to lay flowers in a show of support and respect at 1381 West Poplar Street, West York Borough, Pennsylvania,” officers wrote on Facebook.

The borough had no further comment out of respect for the families involved. 

WellSpan York Hospital received five individuals from the UPMC shooting today. The hospital provided FOX43 with the following statement:

“Shortly after 11:00 a.m., WellSpan York Hospital clinical teams were notified of an active shooter situation with injuries at a nearby hospital. At approximately 12:00 p.m., the first patient arrived from this incident for treatment at the hospital. Emergency Department teams have evaluated five individuals for treatment and we do not expect to receive any additional patients. We are unable to share details about specific patients due to HIPAA privacy limitations.”

Update, 1 p.m.: According to the Associated Press, a hospital gunman was killed after shots were fired at UPMC Memorial.

Officials with the hospital confirmed to AP that no patients were injured and that the gunman is dead, although the extent of any other injuries was unclear.

A recent Facebook post made by UPMC Memorial states: 

“We have received confirmed reports of a gunman at UPMC Memorial, and shots fired. The gunman is deceased, and no patients have been injured. The hospital is now secure but is on divert. This is a fluid situation; law enforcement is on premises and is managing the situation. We are grateful to all the local law enforcement agencies for their quick response.

If you are an employee of UPMC Memorial and are not scheduled to work today, please stay home. A hotline has been established at 717-849-5338 or 717-849-5334 for families of patients seeking more information. Families of patients arriving on site should report to the parking lot of the OSS building across the street from the hospital.”

Pennsylvania’s Governor Josh Shapiro also has made a statement on his X account stating:

“I’ve been briefed on the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County and I am on my way to the scene.

The hospital is now secure and members of the @PAStatePolice and @PEMAHQ are on the ground responding alongside our local and federal partners.

Follow the direction of local authorities and stay clear of the area. We will share more updates as they become available.”

Previously: An active threat at UPMC Memorial in West Manchester Township, York County is over, according to the County’s public information officer.

The PIO said the threat “has been neutralized.”

People are being asked to avoid the area near the hospital, as police investigate.

Details are limited at this time, but there is a large police presence at UPMC Memorial, located at 1701 Innovation Drive.

A witness called FOX43 and stated that multiple people were shot inside the hospital. 

An investigation is underway.

A joint statement from State Senator Dawn Keefer and State Representative Seth Grove has been issued regarding the shooting:

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic shooting at UPMC this morning. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

We are immensely grateful to our local law enforcement departments, Pennsylvania State Police, UPMC officers, Pennsylvania Game Wardens, York County Sheriffs, EMS and all other emergency responders for their swift actions in securing the scene, treating the wounded and ensuring the safety of our community. Their dedication and bravery in moments of crisis are truly commendable. 

As we continue to monitor this heartbreaking situation, we join our community in praying for UPMC patients and staff, those who were injured and for the loved ones coping with an unthinkable act. We stand ready to support those impacted in any way we can.

State Representative of the 95th District, Carol Hill-Evans made the following statement on her Facebook page:
