Morgan Park, Chicago shooting today: Police officer shot in vest, 2 hurt in gunfire exchange in 11400-block of South Davol Street

In a dramatic incident on Chicago’s South Side early Sunday, a police officer was shot in the protective vest, and two others were injured during a gunfire exchange, according to officials.

Authorities reported that officers were dispatched to address a disturbance in the Morgan Park area, specifically in the 11400 block of South Davol Street, shortly before 1 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a group of individuals, including two men aged 35 and 18, who were engaged in a conflict, police stated.

As the officers attempted to separate the men, a gun discharged, hitting one victim and impacting an officer’s body armor, police explained.

In response, another officer fired back, injuring the assailant and inadvertently wounding the victim, according to police reports.

The victim was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition.

The offender was taken to Christ Hospital in fair condition.

The officer who was hit in his vest was also taken to a local hospital, but he has since been discharged.

CPD’s Investigative Response Team and the Civilian Office of Police Accountability are investigating.
