() Police have video of the shooter who killed conservative political activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk at an event at Utah Valley University yesterday.

The update comes after conflicting statements from law enforcement on whether a suspect had been apprehended or not in the hours immediately following the shooting.

Charlie Kirk shooting

Kirk was shot and killed while speaking before a crowd at the university as he debated college students on politics. The event was part of his “American Comeback” tour.

Witnesses describe chaos as people fled following the single gunshot that was fired, striking Kirk in the neck. Kirk was taken offstage by his personal security team and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Although event security included Kirk’s personal security team along with six uniformed police officers and additional plainclothes officers, the shooter managed to escape.

What do we know about the suspect?

FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Bohls said investigators are not commenting on whether they have determined the identity of the suspect.

“The suspect blended in well with the community,” Bohls said, noting the suspect appeared to be of college age.

Investigators said they are not sure how far the suspect may have fled at this time.

Law enforcement response to the shooting

Initially, the university said a suspect was in custody. Later, they said the suspect was at large and the person originally detained was not involved.

A second person was detained and questioned later in the evening, but later released.

Investigators say neither of the two people detained yesterday were involved in the shooting and asked the public not to harass them.

Authorities now say the single shot was fired from a rooftop about 200 yards away and the shooter then jumped off the building and fled the campus through a neighborhood.

Utah Dept of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason said police do have good video of the suspect but have not released the footage or the identity of the suspect.

Investigators are asking anyone in the neighborhood to share security or doorbell camera footage to assist in the investigation.

What do we know about the weapon used?

Investigators recovered a bolt-action rifle believed to have been used in the shooting in the woods.
