An Indiana couple were arrested this week after their 10-year-old son revealed the horrific details of his home life to police, including being zip-tied by his mother and forced to stand in the corner for hours on end.

Melody Greenwood, 38, and Adam Greenwood, 36, of Muncie County, may face charges of neglect after their ‘extremely skinny’ son showed signs of abuse during a hospital visit earlier this month, leading to police intervention at the home, The Muncie Star Press reported.

The couple were booked into Delaware County Jail on several preliminary charges of child neglect in late February, but have since been released on bond.

The harrowing discovery came after the Greenwoods’ brought their 10-year-old son to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital for an exam on February 24, but his appearance immediately raised alarm bells for medical staff.

The child, who was described as ‘extremely skinny,’ was showing signs of both ‘nutritional’ neglect and child abuse, prompting concerned staff members to contact the Indiana Department of Child Services.

Law enforcement found the 10-year-old boy with ‘scars and marks’ on his wrists when they arrived at the family residence the next day, describing the injuries to be ‘consistent with restraints,’ according to the affidavit obtained by the outlet.

According to court documents obtained by Fox 59, the young boy revealed that his mother zip-tied his wrists and bound them behind his back during an interview with police.

This would occur as his siblings, who were said to receive completely different treatment, got ready for bed at night. The mother would then allegedly force her son into wearing the restraints to bed, per the court docs.

The young boy, who told police that the tightness of the constraints had hurt him, said that when his mother would free his hands, she would allegedly remove the zip-ties with scissors, leaving cuts and bruises.

Officers also interviewed the other children in the home, who stated that their brother was grounded at the time of their arrival, the court documents detail.

According to the boy’s siblings, their parents had frequently singled out their brother, as they claimed he was often ‘grounded’ for behavior issues and ordered to stand against a wall for ’10-12 hours’ as a result.

If he moved away from the wall, the siblings alleged, they were instructed to ‘beat him up.’

As for how the couple fed their children, the 10-year-old boy allegedly survived on ‘canned food, vegetables and protein’ while his siblings were given ‘cheeseburgers and fast food,’ according to the documents.

Additionally, the mother told officers, the boy was prohibited from snacking – junk food included, Fox 59 reported.

Allegedly, the court documents state, the 10-year-old child was also prohibited to engage in popular children past-times, including watching television or playing video games with the rest of his siblings.

The boy would be forced to have a blanket draped over his head as a cruel attempt at further preventing him from participating in harmless activities, such as innocently looking over at the TV screen.

The mother-of-eight told police that each of her children were home-schooled, Fox 59 reported. One child, however, claimed that the two oldest siblings were their primary source of education.

Their day to day schooling, allegedly, consisted of their two eldest siblings reading them three chapters of a book each day, all while their parents were at work, according to the court documents.

Both Melody and Adam were booked into Delaware County Jail following the harrowing discovery, where they were facing several preliminary charges of child neglect of a dependent.

However Melody, who was preliminarily charged with three counts of neglect, was released after posting a $15,000 bond. Her husband, preliminarily charged with two counts of neglect, posted his $10,000 bond, the Star Press reported.

Whether or not official charges will be filed depends on The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office.

Officials with the Indiana Department of Child Services are also investigating the allegations, according to the Star Press.

The family reportedly moved to Muncie in September, the Star Press reported. They have no prior charges against them.
