(KTXL) Calling it a “scene straight out of a movie,” the California Highway Patrol said a 9-year-old boy took his family’s car and attempted to drive himself to school, crashing into a patrol vehicle on the way.

The CHP office for the Oroville area in Northern California said that an officer first encountered the car in northwest Oroville when it was stopped in the middle of an intersection Wednesday morning.

When the officer instructed the driver to move the car, the vehicle sped off, leading to a “short and erratic chase that ended in a dirt parking lot” about two blocks away and across the street from an elementary school, the CHP said.

After stopping, the car reversed and rammed the CHP patrol car “in a moment that could have led to a grave outcome,” the agency added.

The officer then found out the driver was a 9-year-old boy who was attempting to drive himself to school.

The boy was taken to school after other authorities were alerted. The CHP said the two vehicles had minor damages and no people were injured.

The CHP said the situation served as a reminder of the responsibilities of drivers and the need to talk with children about the dangers of unauthorized driving.
