The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the man’s home after his family reported he fired shots with his pistol and talked about hurting himself.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man was hospitalized in critical condition late Sunday night after being shot by Jacksonville sheriff’s officers, after shooting at them, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after 11 p.m., JSO said four officers arrived at the man’s home, located in the 1800 block of Sandalwood Boulevard, after the man’s family called the sheriff’s office and said he fired shots with his pistol and talked about hurting himself.

JSO Chief Alan Parker said the man, identified as 51-year-old Andreas Wetzel, had been drinking wine before officers arrived at his home and shot his gun to “let off some steam.”

When the officers made contact with Wetzel, Parker said he was sitting in his car with the gun.

JSO said Wetzel shot at the officers after they asked him several times to get of the car, prompting them to shoot him. Wetzel was shot in the torso, Parker told First Coast News.

Once Wetzel was stable at the hospital, according to JSO, officers asked him why he was drinking leading up to the incident. Wetzel stated he has been dealing with “long-standing relationship issues” and was depressed from it, Parker said.

The officers involved in the shooting were Brandon Nelson #73058, Katy Hrkach #84673, Joseph Naber #87250 and Vincent Davis Jr. #87496, according to Parker. This marks as the 6th officer-involved shooting in 2025 for JSO.
