GARY, Ind. (WGN) A man was fatally shot by police on Tuesday night after he barricaded himself inside a northwest Indiana home with his 1-year-old child.

According to Gary police, it all started after officers responded to a report of a hostage situation in the 2200 block of Carolina Street in Gary, just after 8:30 p.m.

Officers said a woman called police to report that her boyfriend, who was armed with a gun, was allegedly acting strangely inside their home after he used drugs and locked himself in a room with their one-year-old child.

About 20 minutes later, just before 9 p.m., dispatch received a second call regarding a shooting victim near the location of the first call.

Officers responded to the location of the second call and found a 35-year-old man who had suffered a gunshot wound to his arm. He later told officers that he had been shot by his cousin, who was the subject of the nearby hostage situation.

According to police, an investigation revealed that the man had traveled to the home in the 2200 block of Carolina Street in an effort to get the child before police arrived but during his attempt, the suspect became aggressive and shot him.

The victim then fled the scene without the child and returned to his home where he called the police.

The man was treated at the scene but declined further medical attention.

Officers at the scene of the hostage situation were able to make contact with the suspect and could hear the child crying, but could not see the child. They then attempted to speak with the suspect through the rear door of the home, but the man became more aggressive and began shooting at police through the door.

Officers then retreated and set up a perimeter around the home and notified the SWAT team.

The Gary Police SWAT team and negotiators arrived shortly after but were not able to get the suspect to respond to calls or commands and said he “actively resisted all de-escalation efforts.”

SWAT members attempted to enter the home but retreated again after the suspect began shooting in their direction. They then called in the Lake County Sheriff’s Department SWAT Unit to use its armored vehicle and the team was able to enter the home using a ram.

After making entry, deputies deployed a drone into the home and could see that the suspect had moved to the second floor with the child. They attempted to communicate with the suspect several more times but were not successful and eventually deployed tear gas inside the home.

After deploying the tear gas, the suspect fled from the home carrying the child in one arm while allegedly armed with a gun.

As the suspect fled the home and ran toward officers and his vehicle, officers opened fire on the suspect and he was fatally struck. It is unclear if the suspect began shooting first.

Gary Fire Department paramedics quickly began life-saving measures on the suspect, but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

The child was uninjured in the incident but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The Department of Family Services was also notified about the shooting.

“Our community is deeply saddened by this tragic incident that began as a family matter but escalated into a critical public safety situation involving a young child,” stated Chief of Police, Derrick Cannon. “I commend the officers who responded to this dangerous scene where the subject repeatedly fired at officers. I also extend my sincere gratitude to Lake County Sheriff, Oscar Martinez for providing additional resources, including their Police Assisted Recovery Initiative (PARI) team with licensed social workers who supported our negotiators’ de-escalation efforts.”

An investigation into the deadly shooting is now underway by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.

Authorities have not yet identified the suspect killed.
