Almost seven in ten Americans prefer to say ‘Merry Christmas’ instead of ‘Happy Holidays’, a new DailyMail.com poll has revealed.

Just 26 percent of people opt for a less religious greeting during the festive period, according the results.

Democrats were most likely to opt for Happy Holidays, but even six in ten liberals said they would choose Merry Christmas instead.

The results comes after DailyMail.com polled 1,000 people across various demographics.

‘While even a festive greeting can be polarized in today’s America, these results show that Christmas can remain something of a unifier: majorities of every major demographic group prefer ‘Merry Christmas’ to “Happy holidays”,’ Joe Alder, senior research associate at J.L. Partners, told DailyMail.com.

‘The future seems rather more uncertain, however, with Gen Z almost twice as likely as over 65s to prefer the less explicitly religious phrase.’

Meanwhile, five percent of respondents said they would use neither greeting or something else entirely.

Women were more likely wish someone a ‘Merry Christmas’ than men, according to the results which found 72 percent of women use the religious phrase compared to just 66 per cent of men.

The most stark divide was between those aged 18-29 and those aged 65+, with 78 percent older people plumping for the more traditional greeting compared to 59 percent of young people.

Happy Holidays is commonly touted as a more inclusive festive greeting, which honors the multiple religious and cultural holidays at this time of year.

However, some feel the use of the secular salutation is part of the ‘war on Christmas’ discourse which rears its head every year.

And this holiday season is no different, last month it emerged that a Wisconsin council had instructed staff to avoid red and green decorations in public buildings and replacing religious ornaments with ‘snow people’.

City workers in the small town of Wauwatosa were issued guidelines on how to decorate for the holidays without offending people.

The results produced an overwhelming majority for the traditional greeting, which many feel is under attack as part of the so-called 'War on Christmas'

While previous years have seen major brands come under fire for failing to embrace the religious symbolism of the season.

In 2015, Evangelists criticized Starbucks’ red holiday cups because they did not feature a traditional festive design.

Donald Trump took up the cause and suggested a boycott during a rally in Springfield, Illinois.

The presidential hopeful pledged that if elected, Americans will ‘all be saying Merry Christmas again’.
