According to a recent POLITICO survey, many Canadians increasingly perceive the United States as a source of global instability.
In collaboration with the U.K. polling firm Public First, the poll revealed that 58% of Canadians do not consider the U.S. a dependable ally. Furthermore, 57% of participants believe that the United States cannot be relied upon during a crisis.
Additionally, the survey indicated that 67% of Canadians feel the U.S. poses challenges to its allies rather than offering support. Meanwhile, 69% agree that the U.S. often exacerbates global issues instead of resolving them. POLITICO highlights that 43% of Canadians see the U.S. as “mostly a threat” to worldwide peace.
This poll’s release coincides with the Trump administration’s recent push to enforce global tariffs. On Saturday, President Trump declared plans to impose 15% tariffs on international imports.
As for providing support, 67% of Canadian respondents said the U.S. “challenges” rather than supports its allies and 69% agree that the U.S. tends to create problems for other countries, rather than solves them. POLITICO notes that 43% of Canadian respondents cited the U.S. as “mostly a threat” to global stability.
The publication of this poll comes as the Trump administration doubles down on global tariffs. On Saturday, President Trump announced he would be imposing 15% tariffs on imports from other countries.
This tariff hike comes one day after Trump announced he would impose a new 10% global tariff after the Supreme Court ruled against the sweeping tariffs he instituted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
