The gangway collapsed Friday night during a fireworks show, plunging spectators into the water.
FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Spectators at Fernandina Beach’s fireworks show were plunged into the water when a gangway at the marina collapsed.
Fernandina Beach officials report there were only a few minor injuries, and it was caused by too many people on the gangway.
While each of the docks are still accessible, there is electrical wiring running under the gangway, so power was shut off to most of the marina on Saturday.
Boat captains spent the day going back and forth, situating what they can on their boats while trying to figure out how long they can go without power.
“I have a boat in the marina,” Amelia Angler Outfitters Captain Terry Lacoss said. “I can’t charge my batteries for my charter so I have to take it out of the water, take it home to charge up my batteries and clean it, but I think we’ll get by.”
One boat captain said his family had to get a short term rental because they were staying on their boat in the marina and couldn’t go without power.
A diver came on Saturday to observe the underside of the gangway and document the damage.
A marina official said they were hoping to have the power back on by Sunday.
