As the competition to host the Chicago Bears heats up, yet another community in Northwest Indiana steps into the arena with hopes of securing the NFL team’s new home. Amidst the ongoing buzz in Arlington Heights, Portage, Indiana, is gearing up to present its ambitious proposal for a new Bears stadium, intriguingly named “Halas Harbor.”
Portage officials are set to unveil their vision on Wednesday, showcasing a glimpse of what the sprawling 300-acre complex could become. The proposed location, conveniently situated between Route 12 and I-94, offers a strategic position that could appeal to the team.

The Bears have been actively considering various sites, including one near Hammond, as Indiana legislators hustle to finalize plans before their spring session wraps up in less than three weeks. This urgency underscores the state’s dedication to attracting the NFL franchise.

Indiana State Representative Earl Harris, representing the 2nd District, emphasized the seriousness of their efforts, stating, “That again for me shows how serious we are in Indiana, that we have a bill in place and structured about making sure those economic and financial things are taken care of.” With legislative support and a strategic location, Portage is making a compelling case to become the Bears’ next home.

Sources tell ABC7 the Bears and legislative leaders have met weekly since December – to discuss the state paying for infrastructure around the stadium while the team pays for the stadium itself.

Chicago, however, does not appear to be in the running, but Mayor Brandon Johnson said he is still not giving up hope.
