OSLO — Norwegian authorities are actively investigating a potential explosion that occurred early Sunday near the U.S. Embassy in Oslo, officials announced.

No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. According to a press release from Oslo police, they received alerts about a “loud bang” or explosion around 1 a.m.

Local media outlets have indicated that the explosion caused minor damage to one of the embassy’s entrances. Witnesses in the vicinity described a scene filled with thick smoke following the blast. Police are currently seeking witnesses as part of their efforts to identify those responsible.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has deployed additional personnel in response to the incident. However, communication adviser Martin Bernsen confirmed that the country’s terror threat level remains unchanged.

“This is an unacceptable incident that we are treating with the utmost seriousness,” stated Astri Aas-Hansen, Norway’s Minister of Justice and Public Security.

“The police have stated that they are investigating the case with significant resources, and that nothing indicates the situation poses any danger to the public.”

The U.S. Embassy in Oslo referred media queries to the U.S. State Department, which did not immediately return a request for comment. Nor did Oslo police. Other details were not available.
