Powerful 7.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Japan, Triggering Tsunami Warning

A powerful earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan on Monday afternoon, leading the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for the area.

The seismic event, with an initial magnitude of 7.5, hit near Sanriku in northern Japan around 4:53 p.m. local time. The quake occurred approximately six miles beneath the ocean surface, according to the agency.

Television broadcasts showed news updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which predicted possible tsunami waves reaching up to 3 meters (approximately 9.84 feet) along vast stretches of northern Japan’s coastline following the earthquake. This information was relayed from Tokyo on April 20, 2026, as reported by REUTERS/Issei Kato.

At Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture, authorities recorded a tsunami wave height of about 2.6 feet. Another nearby port in the prefecture reported waves of around 1.3 feet, according to the agency’s data.

The agency further warned that tsunami waves could potentially reach up to 10 feet in height, posing a significant threat to the region.
