Pretrial hearing for Luigi Mangione to resume Monday after court releases new evidence in CEO murder case

The courtroom in New York is set to reconvene today as Luigi Mangione, the accused in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, makes another appearance. The judge will continue deliberations on whether pivotal evidence should be permitted in the impending murder trial.

The ongoing pretrial hearing revolves around evidence collected following Mangione’s arrest. His defense team argues that certain items were seized before Mangione was informed of his legal rights.

On Saturday, the court approved the release of additional evidence, including a piece of paper with a to-do list that prosecutors allege is connected to Thompson’s murder. Among the evidence is also a photograph of a folding knife allegedly found in Mangione’s possession.

Further complicating matters is a Greyhound bus ticket made out to Sam Dawson, one of several aliases prosecutors claim Mangione used. At the time of his arrest, Mangione reportedly identified himself as Mark Rosario, a name matching a fraudulent New Jersey driver’s license.

As the pretrial proceedings continue, Mangione’s legal team is vigorously contesting the admissibility of the evidence, seeking to have it excluded from the forthcoming trial. Their aim is to challenge the legitimacy of how the evidence was acquired.

His lawyers want the ghost gun and journal found in his backpack thrown out. Prosecutors say the journal includes bitter writings against for-profit health insurers.

Lawyers for Mangione claim he was not read his Miranda Rights before he was searched, after his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Prosecutors say under Pennsylvania law, officers had a legal right to search the backpack.

Mangione’s arrest came after he was spotted at a McDonald’s. The 911 call was released for the first time last week in court:

McDonald’s Manager: “I have a customer here that some other customers were suspicious of, that he looked like the CEO shooter from New York.”

911 Dispatcher: “You said black jacket?”

McDonald’s Manager: “Uh huh. A tan beanie.”

911 Dispatcher: “OK.”

McDonald’s Manager: “And like the blue medical mask.”

Mangione was last in court on Thursday. Proceedings in his ongoing pretrial hearing were canceled on Friday due to Mangione feeling sick.
