A professor from the University of Tennessee became popular among students, earning the title ‘favorite teacher ever,’ after he decided to cancel his class following the announcement of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement.
The moment when Associate Professor Matthew Pittman informed his students of the class cancellation due to the significant pop culture event was captured on video, which quickly gained popularity online. He humorously suggested that the students required some time to ‘process this information.’
Pittman began by reminding the class they were due for a BioChem midterm that day, ‘but Taylor and Travis just got engaged.’
‘Due to this information, I can’t focus, you all can’t focus,’ he told his students.
‘Class is canceled, get outta here. We need time to process this information.’
The video garnered tons of attention online, as the news of the engagement dominated social media and news outlets.
‘And just like that, he became the favorite professor,’ one comment said.
‘He deserves a wedding invite,’ another laughed.

However, Pittman, who studies social influence, cognition, and social media, wrote in a post on Instagram that the video was a skit to connect the moment to his classroom.
The School of Advertising and Public Relations professor said in the video that the engagement was a very exciting time, not just from an advertising and pop culture perspective but also as a self proclaimed fan.
‘I don’t know how anybody could be expected to focus on schoolwork or anything work or career related right now,’ he said.
‘This is pretty big news,’ Pittman continued, adding that he believed their engagement announcement on social media would be crowned the ‘number one shared post in the history of social media.’
‘It’s gonna be everywhere for a long time. This is gonna be crazy.’
