Katie Stevens is embarking on a hallmark of her career — at Hallmark, that is.
While speaking with DECIDER at San Diego Comic-Con, The Bold Type alum shared her thoughts on the “unbelievable” experience of making her network debut in Providence Falls, a three-part film adaptation of Jude Deveraux and Tara Sheets’ time travel fantasy series.
“It was one of the most enjoyable and creatively fulfilling experiences I’ve had so far,” she shares. “Everyone, from the crew to the executive producers, was incredibly passionate and eager to create something remarkable. They encouraged me to contribute ideas, leading to a truly collaborative effort.”
Stevens hints that the project, which stars her, Lachlan Quarmby, and Evan Roderick, might surprise critics who claim the network lacks “elevated” content, something she strongly disagrees with.
“I think Hallmark tells really incredible stories, and I feel like they are kind of ahead of everyone else in terms of telling rom-coms and romances and things like that,” she adds. “I’m really excited for people to see this, because from people that have seen it so far, I feel like there’s almost like a shock, like, ‘This is Hallmark?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah,’ because Hallmark is capable of way more than people give them credit for. So I’m really excited that we’ve gotten to tell these stories, and that Hallmark has given us that sort of opportunity to have Hallmark viewed in this really epic light.”
Providence Falls begins in Ireland in 1844, after which the film trilogy follows rogue and thief Liam O’Connor (Quarmby), who falls for Cora McLeod (Stevens), though she is betrothed to another man. At the hands of the Angels of Destiny, O’Connor travels to the present in order to help Cora end up with Finn (Roderick), who she was supposed to wed in 1844.
Though Stevens has yet to meet Deveraux, she follows her and is “looking forward to hearing if she has seen it and what she thinks.” In preparation for the role, Stevens says she listened to the audio book, and notes that “there’s things from the book that don’t happen the exact way in the movie.” For one, her character Cora is “blonde” with curly hair, unlike Stevens, who is a brunette.
“I think that there’s things in the book that are a little more risqué than we can do on Hallmark,” she explains. “But I think that we did a really good job of, especially when it comes to the relationships of the characters, making sure that they are true to the emotions and the feelings that these characters had. And I hope that people who are fans of the book will accept with open arms the version of this that we have done. Because there’s a lot that’s similar to the book, but then little details here and there that are different when you’re changing it to the screen.”
She identifies most with how “incredibly empathetic” Cora is, noting that she “sees people’s potential despite their mistakes.”
“I like to have a similar outlook on life,” she continues. “I think that people deserve the chance to course-correct throughout their life, and I think that’s my favorite thing about her, is her willingness to give people a second chance.”
Stevens also has nothing but praise for her co-star Quarmby, who she describes as “the kindest, most generous, best human” that “became one of [her] best friends through the shooting process.”
“Lachlan is just a star, and I can’t wait for the world to get to see him,” she says. “Hopefully this leads to many, many other things for him, because he’s so talented.”
“I can’t imagine shooting this project and having done it with somebody else,” she claims. “I feel like I was so lucky that [he] was the person that they chose.”
Production on the trilogy took place over two and a half months, which initially seemed like a surprisingly quick turnaround to Stevens. However, she was impressed by how the network did this “so seamlessly.”
“It was definitely a lot of hard work, but it was so much fun that it didn’t feel like work at the end of the day,” she says.
Stevens likens her experience filming the three Providence Falls movies to “shooting the first season of a show, where you really get to kind of marinate in that character.” She also highlighted that they “filmed” the three parts in order.
“It really felt like we got that through line, and we were able to build with each movie the characters, their emotions, what they’re going through,” she says. “I really loved getting to do it as a trilogy.”
As for her work on The Bold Type, a dramedy following three women working at a magazine which aired its fifth and final season on Freeform in2021, Stevens gushes that she and her co-stars Aisha Dee and Meghann Fahy “are gunning for” its return.
“We talk about it constantly that in every interview we do for other projects, we’re always talking about like, ‘Yeah, we all want to do something where we bring The Bold Type back,’” she teases. “We talk about it in every interview trying to manifest it so that we can do it. I literally was texting with both of them like an hour ago, being like, ‘Yep, I’m in every interview talking about how we want to do it again.’ And they’re like, ‘Hell yeah, let’s do it.’”
Nonetheless, Stevens has another project coming up the pike: Prime Video’s Crimhttps://decider.com/show/criminal-2025/inal, a series based on Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’ graphic novels. Stevens teases that she “had to pinch” herself at the table read, which she says featured the likes of Charlie Hunnam, Emilia Clarke, Luke Evans, Richard Jenkins, and John Hawkes.
“It was really, really awesome to be a part of it,” she shares. “And I had to do ADR [Automatic Dialogue Replacement] the other day, so I got to see a little glimpse, and it just made me that much more excited because it’s a role unlike any other role that I’ve ever played. I’m excited for people to see that I’m capable of something a little different.”
In terms of whether or not Stevens would return to Hallmark for a future project, she immediately responds, “Yeah, of course.”
“I mean, I’m already like because I loved this cast so much, I’m like, hopefully it does well, and there could be a spin-off,” she posits. “Me, Lachlan, Amitai [Mamorstein], Evan, everybody’s already pitching their ideas of how we would be able to continue this. So hopefully the Hallmark audience really loves these stories and also wants them to continue.”
Providence Falls premieres on Hallmark Channel at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
