The music world mourns the loss of punk rock icon Lou Koller, who succumbed to cancer at the age of 59.
Koller rose to fame as the dynamic lead vocalist of the influential band Sick Of It All, a group he co-founded in New York City in 1986, leaving an indelible mark on the hardcore scene.
Band members confirmed the heart-wrenching news on Friday, posting a heartfelt tribute on Instagram to their late comrade.
“With deep sorrow, we share the passing of our brother Lou Koller with our global hardcore community,” the post read. “The magnitude of our loss is beyond words.”
Koller’s untimely passing comes as the band was on the cusp of celebrating its 40th anniversary, marking a poignant milestone in their remarkable journey.
‘And Lou’s camaraderie, commitment and enthusiasm were always steadfast throughout the years.’

His death was confirmed by the late singer’s bandmates who shared an emotional statement to Instagram on Friday
‘We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman,’ the statement continued.
‘Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.’
His bandmates added, ‘At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund.
‘You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years.’
Koller’s ‘battle is over now and he can finally rest. Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.’
Back in June 2024, the music artist revealed that doctors had found a tumor in his esophagus and was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma cancer.
Koller had shared a video to the group’s Instagram page at the time, explaining that doctors ‘found a tumor in my esophagus that goes into my stomach.
‘And I’ll have to be getting treatment all summer – and of course, with full support of the band.’

He continued, ‘As soon as they heard it, they were, like, “Forget the tour. Just get healthy.”‘
Koller said that both he and the band ‘feel sorry for the fans’ as well as the crew and promoters.
The singer further expressed, ‘Thank you so much for all of your support. I’ll hopefully beat this thing and see you at the end of the summer – or maybe the winter.’

Koller was born in Queens, New York and later formed the hardcore punk band Sick Of It All with his brother Pete when they were still in high school.
The siblings were joined by drummer David Lamb as the original members of the group. Mark McNeely also later joined as bassist.
The band’s first show took place in May 1986 in Long Island at Right Track Inn.

Armand Majidi and Rich Cipriano replaced Lamb and McNeely when they left the punk group.
Sick Of It All’s first studio album was titled Blood, Sweat And No Tears and dropped in 1989.
The band has released 12 studio albums, with their most recent LP being Wake The Sleeping Dragon! (2018).
