Putin in China as no progress is made in Ukraine peace talks

() There has still not been a peace deal reached between Ukraine and Russia as the war between the two nations continues.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had a Monday deadline, set by U.S. President Donald Trump, to commit to peace talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Putin has instead been in attendance at a summit in Beijing, China, hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping, where he is strengthening his ties with China, India and North Korea. Meanwhile, the U.S. and European Union have been working towards postwar plans for Ukraine.

The Trump administration has said that in recent days, Putin has not been making strides towards peace with Ukraine following the Alaska summit he and Trump attended. So far, there has been no word on whether Russia will be hit with the economic sanctions Trump threatened if no agreement has been reached.

While the meeting was about the countries in attendance countering Western influence on the global stage, the topic of Ukraine did come up, with Putin saying there are mutual understandings between the Kremlin and the White House that the war must come to an end. Putin added that he is open to the idea of EU membership for Ukraine.

“As for the Ukrainian EU membership, we have never objected to this,” Putin said during the second day of the Beijing meeting Tuesday. “As for NATO, this is another issue. The point is the security of the Russian Federation, not only today or in the midterm time span, it is about the long-term outlook. Our position here is well-known: We consider it unacceptable for us.”

A face-to-face meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin also appears to be up in the air, with Yuri Ushakov, the former Russian ambassador to the U.S., saying that as far as he knows, there was “no agreement between Putin and Trump on it.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that all options remain on the table when it comes to economic pressure put on Russia to drive it to the negotiating position.
