Quigley House reports 20% increase in service needs amid holiday season

In 2025, survivors of domestic violence in Northeast Florida benefited from nearly 9,500 shelter nights, highlighting a growing demand for such services compared to the previous year, according to Quigley House.

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — Quigley House, the sole domestic violence and sexual assault support center in Clay County, has observed a notable surge in individuals seeking assistance, particularly as the festive season approaches.

The organization reports a significant uptick of almost 20% in overnight shelter stays this year.

Interim CEO Jackie Krug attributes this increase to the expanding population in Clay County, which has led to more people reaching out for help. Additionally, calls to their 24/7 hotline have risen. This trend is reflective of a broader national pattern observed across similar centers.

While Krug finds solace in the fact that awareness of their services is growing, the heightened demand presents challenges. The staff is encountering increasingly complex situations, including legal challenges, which intensify the pressure to secure stable housing for families within tight timelines. Nevertheless, they anticipate a rise in cases during the holiday period each year.

Krug explains that friends and family should keep an eye out for warning signs, especially sudden changes in behavior.

“If your loved one used to be bubbly and warm, and they’re now removing themselves or not engaging, it’s worth checking in,” she said.

If someone confides that they’re being abused, Krug says your support could save a life.

“The longer they stay quiet, the longer they could be experiencing it, and it could progress. Just saying, ‘I’m here for you, I believe you,’ makes a difference,” she added

With the holidays here—a time when domestic violence often rises—Quigley House is asking the community for help. They say the number one way to help is to donate gift cards or monetary contributions, and they also have a holiday wish list on their website.

Their services are free and confidential, and advocates answer the phone around the clock, even during the holidays.

If you or someone you know needs help, you can call Quigley House’s 24/7 helpline at 904-284-0061.
