No excuse for Rangers to not name captain — here's who it should be

Regarding the Rangers in the midst of a summer recess.

1. Deciding whether Mika Zibanejad should play center or right wing, and choosing if Braden Schneider should switch to his off-side for the second pair or stay as a natural right-hander on the third defense line, are the key choices incoming head coach Mike Sullivan will face during training camp.

However, the most significant choice for the organization before the season starts is determining if they will select a new captain. The last three captains — Jacob Trouba, Ryan McDonagh, and Ryan Callahan — were traded within four seasons of assuming the role, and the captain prior was released before retiring due to injury. That captain was, notably, Chris Drury.

This history might make the leadership hesitant. It’s likely they are. They might consider leaving the role vacant and opting for several alternates, similarly to what was done in the four years between McDonagh’s departure in the 2018 deadline and Trouba being appointed prior to the 2022-23 season.
