Flags at all government buildings and grounds in Georgia will be flown at half-staff Thursday. Here’s why

MACON, Ga. — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered flags at all state buildings and grounds be flown at half staff on Thursday as they recognize law enforcement personnel who died in the line of duty during Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Kemp signed an executive order on Tuesday ordering the flags flown at half-staff on Thursday.

“Thousands of Georgia’s bravest men and women, in varying capacities of law enforcement, answer the call ‘To Protect and Serve’ their fellow man while putting their lives on the line to maintain public safety,” the executive order said.

In the executive order, they said that the decision was driven in part to make sure residents of the state of Georgia recognize the sacrifices of law enforcement across Central Georgia.

“It is imperative that all citizens are aware of and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices made by our law enforcement officers who work for the betterment of their communities,” according to the executive order.

The order applies only to state buildings and grounds in the state, but it applies to both the flag of the State of Georgia and the U.S. flag as well.

“On Peace Officer Memorial Day, it is proper and fitting to honor the brave men and women who offer their lives in the pursuit of excellence and the protection of life and property,” the executive order said.
