New study finds that icy New Yorkers are least friendly Americans

A new study has found New York is the least friendly state in the nation.

In the 2024 research conducted by the World Population Review, the Friendliest States were determined based on various factors. These factors included personal travel experiences reported by more than 2.5 million tourists, the average tipping rate in each state, and the outcomes of an Instagram survey. All these elements were considered to assess and rank the levels of friendliness in different states across the country.

New York’s concrete jungle — despite an average tip rate of nearly 19% — came in 50th, or dead last.

Gothamites weren’t buying it.

“New Yorkers are kind, but they’re not nice to your face,” said Long Island native and Manhattanite Joe Massaro, 40. “People in other states are nice to your face but they’re not kind behind your back or when you need it.”

But who needs smiles when New York City’s got swagger?

The Big Apple was voted the second-best city in the world, according to international consultant group Resonance’s guide for the World’s Best Cities in 2025.

Its “indomitable spirit” was cited among the reasons for the top-tier ranking.

The Empire State is not the only East Coast locale that needs a crash course in courtesy.

Delaware ranked third-to-last on the list of friendliest states; followed by Massachusetts (46th), New Jersey (45th), New Hampshire (43rd) and Rhode Island (40th).

Well-mannered Minnesotans took the trophy for the friendliest Americans, followed by Tennessee and South Carolina.
