The Powerball jackpot has skyrocketed to an astounding $1.7 billion following the 46th consecutive draw without a grand prize winner.
The winning numbers from Monday night’s draw were 3, 18, 36, 41, 54, with the Powerball number being 7.
Since the beginning of September, players have experienced 46 straight drawings without any hitting the jackpot.
The upcoming draw is scheduled for Christmas Eve on Wednesday, and the prize is anticipated to be the fourth largest in U.S. lottery history.
The odds of securing the Powerball jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million, purposefully set this high to foster substantial jackpots that increase when no one claims the top prize. Despite these daunting odds, lottery officials point out that the chances of winning one of the game’s smaller prizes are significantly more favorable. Drawings occur three times each week.
The estimated $1.6 billion jackpot goes to a winner who opts to receive 30 payments over 29 years through an annuity. Winners almost always choose the game’s cash option, which for Monday night’s drawing would be an estimated $735.3 million.
Powerball tickets cost $2, and the game is offered in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
