JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — With the first hurricane of the Atlantic season now formed, the American Red Cross is putting a spotlight on safety and the local volunteers who help make it happen.

They call them “Shelter Heroes” people trained to open and operate emergency shelters when disaster strikes.

In just one day, volunteers in Downtown Jacksonville learn everything they need to run a shelter, from handling registration to serving meals.

The Red Cross says it’s committed to staffing at least 10 shelters in Duval County if needed. Trainings happen every other week throughout the year to ensure there’s always help nearby.

“It really gives that community feel in the response because it’s your local neighbor helping others in times of need… we have people close who can open a shelter within a few hours,” said Donna McNair, Disaster Workforce Engagement Manager.
