FDOT will install a roundabout at the intersection of Post street and Old Roosevelt Blvd. and crews will resurface Cassat Avenue to Old Roosevelt Blvd.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Drivers in Jacksonville who live or commute along Post street and Old Roosevelt Blvd. will soon be seeing some changes on the roads.

This spring, The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will begin to resurface Cassat Avenue to Old Roosevelt Blvd. and install a roundabout at the intersection of Post Street and Old Roosevelt.

Business owners in this area told First Coast News they’ve seen crashes and heavy traffic flow in this busy intersection. They’re hopeful that these improvements will make the roads safer.

Salina Brown works at the Subway off Old Roosevelt and she gets a front row seat to the bustling intersection outside her store’s window.

“There’s always a lot of traffic right here in this little intersection and sometimes it gets crowded at times,” Brown said. “Even when I’m leaving work it may take me a good 10 minutes to get out and get into traffic.”

In the short month Brown’s been working at the sub shop, she said she’s seen crashes and run into trouble navigating the intersection herself.

“It’s confusing because they have two green lights right here and one might turn green and the other is red,” Brown said. “Then this side of the road has four or five different lanes, one you can only turn this way or that way, the other you can only go straight.”

In a couple of months, the Florida department of transportation will begin working towards bringing an end to that confusion.

According to Jacob Pickering with FDOT, an elongated roundabout will be installed at Post street and Old Roosevelt intersection, reducing the number of lanes crossing the railroad tracks from seven to two. A design that’s expected to reduce the total number of crashes by 48%

“On post street we’re eliminating so many traffic signals here which makes it more efficient and a lot more safer,” said Jacob Pickering.

“This project is going to make it much safer for folks who are waiting for the train to kind of queue up in a safer fashion and be able to have better access north and south of the railroad track,” he said.

FDOT crews will also be resurfacing post street from Cassat avenue to Old Roosevelt Drivers be on the lookout for updated signs, new pavement markings and ADA sidewalk improvements.

When First Coast News showed Salina Brown the safety project improvements, she said it is something she’s looking forward to seeing.

“I think it will really help, I think it will slow down a lot of traffic,” said Brown, “I’m just excited for them to get it built and see how it goes.

Construction is set to begin in May, 2025 and a detour will be in place until the project is completed in Fall 2026.
