A relative of the late Newark police detective Joseph Azcona expressed disbelief over his tragic death and was shocked by the young age of the 14-year-old alleged perpetrator.

“It’s crazy,” said  Azcona’s uncle, Juan G. Lopez, told The Post when asked about the killer suspect’s youth.

“I’ve been around for over 40 years and that surprised me.”

He also said who he blamed for a young teen, whose name has not been released, committing bloody murder.

“It’s the parents. The way they were raised, the parents,” he said.

Lopez spoke as a large group of family members gathered at the home of Azcona’s dad, Juan, on Saturday night in Newark.

Shocked kin were still coming to terms with the detective’s sudden and violent death.

The grieving father was too emotionally distraught to offer any words, gutted by the senseless murder of his son Joseph.

Lopez talked of the pain of the loss.

“We work in the city of Newark. We pay taxes. We are business people. We keep things straight and don’t do drugs so this hurt,” Lopez said.

The teenager reportedly used an automatic weapon to shoot 29 bullets at Azcona and his colleague around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Unfortunately, the officers were unable to exit their police vehicle before the gunfire hit them, as disclosed by Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens.

Azcona, a dedicated officer with five years of service, passed away on Saturday morning while surrounded by loved ones at University Hospital. His surviving partner, whose name has not been released, is currently receiving medical care at the same facility following the harrowing encounter.
