BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The remains of what is believed to be a child who went missing in Fayette County eight months ago has been found.
On Thursday afternoon, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that a body was found in a burn pile near the residence of Wendy Pamela Bailey. Although an autopsy has yet to be performed, deputies believe the remains are that of Kahleb Collins, a 1-year-old boy who went missing Sept. 9.
Collins’ disappearance was not known until Dec. 8, when his mother, Wendy Pamela Bailey, was involved in a car crash that killed her husband, Steven Collins, and her 2-year-old daughter, Ryleigh.
Bailey is currently charged with aggravated child abuse, domestic violence and abuse of a corpse.
“This is a heartbreaking outcome, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those who loved Kahleb,” Sheriff Byron Yerby said in a press release. “While this discovery brings a measure of closure, it is also a solemn reminder of the responsibility we all share in protecting our children. We are committed to continuing the pursuit of justice in this case.”
This is a developing story.
