A well-regarded travel expert was tragically shot while walking a quiet street in Houston, en route to visit a friend who is fighting cancer.
Marietta Allison, aged 61 and based in Austin, co-founded a travel business and was famed among her peers for her kindness. She was shot fatally after parking in the Heights neighborhood late Friday, as reported by authorities.
After a tiring day at the hospital, she had just dropped off a close friend and their luggage and was in search of a parking spot when a masked individual approached her in an attempted carjacking.
Police arrived around midnight to find Allison on a sidewalk in northwest Houston, suffering from a gunshot wound. She was quickly taken to a hospital but sadly passed away.
Prosecutors have charged 18-year-old Darius DeWayne Hall, accusing him of attempting to steal Allison’s purse during the incident.
When she fought back, he pulled a gun and shot her once in the neck, according to statements made in court by prosecutor Katie Rogers.Â
Hall then fled in the vehicle belonging to Allison’s friend.
Roughly one hour later, officers spotted the stolen car and began a pursuit.Â

The chase stretched for miles before ending in a crash along the Southwest Freeway near Buffalo Speedway.Â
Investigators said Hall ran from the wreck, triggering a tense, hours-long standoff at a nearby townhome community that kept residents awake through the early morning darkness.
‘Lights went out, and I said, ‘Something’s going down,’ local resident Ken Knisely said to KHOU 11 as he watched the armed response unfold outside his home.
‘We could hear him on the megaphone, ‘Come on out, we’re not going to hurt you.’
Knisely described the moment officers closed in.
‘I opened my door around 4:15am, and there was an officer on his knees with a shield and one behind him with a gun pointing right down the stairs to that unit where they found him,’ he said.Â
‘They’re like, ‘It’s OK, just shut your door and go back in.’ Then I looked out my bedroom window and that’s when I saw the SWAT team.’
Police said Hall was taken into custody around 7am.

Cassie Daniel, the friend Allison had just dropped off, said she heard the gunshot moments after Allison drove off to park
Inside the crashed car, investigators recovered two firearms. A shell casing at the shooting scene will be used for ballistic testing, according to accounts shared publicly by those close to the case.
Hall faces charges of capital murder, tampering with evidence and evading arrest reports Click2Houston.
Court records show he was already under supervision in juvenile court for multiple prior charges, including aggravated robbery and assault, at the time of the shooting.Â
Prosecutors said he had received a 10-year sentence, with three years probated through 2027.Â
Because Hall was 18 at the time of the alleged offense, he is legally eligible for the death penalty, though any decision on punishment would come much later in the legal process.
He is scheduled for a March 23 hearing at which a judge will consider whether to deny bail.
Defense attorney Jose Julio Vela said Hall had little time to confer before appearing in court and is struggling to comprehend the gravity of the accusations.
‘We don’t know if the district attorney will be seeking life in prison or death – and at this point in time, he’s wrapping his head around, as best a young, 18-year-old can, with the severity of the allegations,’ Vela said.
Allison, right, had planned to stay just one night in Houston while her friend, Daniel, left, underwent chemotherapy at an MD Anderson facility

Allison’s final hours were spent helping a friend through chemotherapy treatment.Â
That friend, Cassie Daniel, later described hearing the gunshot moments after Allison drove off to park.
‘There wasn’t any parking, so Marietta had driven around the block to find a parking spot, and we heard the gunshot,’ Daniel said in a Facebook post.
Daniel said she began calling Allison repeatedly but received no answer. Her purse was later found nearby without Daniel’s car keys.
‘The man took her purse, stole my car key, and took the car,’ Daniel wrote, adding that the vehicle was later tracked through its license plate.
Daniel also described the shock of learning where the suspect was found.
‘They found him and barricaded [him] at an apartment complex where he had broken into an empty (thank God) unit,’ she said. ‘He left two guns in my car, and they have a shell casing on the scene so they can match ballistics. He claims the guns are not his.’
She recounted further details investigators relayed to her.

Friends described Allison as someone who frequently put others first and devoted time to supporting people in crisis
‘I was told that he picked up a 16-year-old prostitute (who has been a prostitute since she was 13 – my heart broke at that) who also saw him with a gun,’ Daniel wrote.
Prosecutors said a young woman who rode in the car during the chase told police she found it suspicious Hall – who she said did not own a vehicle – was driving a car with a license plate decorated in pink glitter. When she questioned him, he allegedly waved a handgun.
‘Some f****d up s*** happened today,’ he told her, according to Rogers.
Karin Galindo, a Houston resident who attended Hall’s court appearance, said Allison had recently cut short a trip to Istanbul so she could help the same friend seek treatment in Texas.
‘She was an amazing soul, a bright, bright light in this world,’ Galindo said. ‘She lived her life to the fullest — in abundance. She lived her life like every day was her last.’
Allison was married and had two adult children, Galindo said.

Her husband, Forest Allison, released a statement mourning the sudden loss.
‘I am shocked and heartbroken by the loss of my beloved wife, Marietta,’ he said.Â
‘She was the love of my life and a radiant presence whose compassion, courage, and joy touched countless lives. To know Marietta was to know love, and her light will live on in everyone she inspired.’
Her nephew, Nate James Bakke, also paid tribute.
‘She was incredibly special to me. When we talked, we often talked about empathy, family, and our desire to grow and improve as individual human beings,’ Bakke wrote on Facebook.
