A tragic accident in Jacksonville on Wednesday evening has left one man dead and a woman hospitalized, as reported by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The collision occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Monument Road near its intersection with Lee Road. When First Coast News arrived at the scene, they found a Jeep overturned on the roadside.

According to the sheriff’s office, a woman in her 30s was driving the Jeep eastward along Monument Road. A man in his late 50s was traveling west in a Kia. The crash happened when the man attempted a left turn onto Lee Road, leading to a collision that caused the Jeep to flip over into an empty retention pond.

The sheriff’s office said it happened at around 5:50 p.m., during the evening commute.

A woman in her 30s was driving the Jeep eastbound on Monument Rd., JSO said, while a man in his late 50s was driving westbound in a Kia. When the man attempted to make a left turn onto Lee Road, the two cars collided, causing the Jeep to rollover into a nearby empty retention pond.

Although both drivers were taken to a hospital, the man was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. JSO said the woman is in “stable condition.”

Lee Road remained closed into the late evening hours.

This is the 141st traffic death in Duval County this year, according to JSO reporting.
