In New York state’s basketball coaching arena, one man’s name stands out on the all-time wins list, embodying a truly singular approach to the game.
Those familiar with Ron Naclerio, the esteemed coach of Benjamin Cardozo, recognize his distinctive presence on the sidelines. His style is unmistakable and memorable.
Since 1981, when he took charge of the boys’ basketball team at his alma mater, Naclerio has dedicated his career to basketball and guiding young men through not only high school challenges but their future endeavors as well.
I first encountered Naclerio’s fervor and dynamic energy during my high school years at St. Francis Prep. During a scrimmage against Cardozo, his coaching was anything but conventional. His involvement extended beyond the sidelines as he moved around the court’s perimeter, energetically offering both encouragement and critique to his players. His engagement was relentless, pausing only to step onto the court to provide crucial guidance.
