Royce White has been navigating a whirlwind of experiences recently, and it seems this intriguing chapter of his life is far from over.
On Saturday night, White shared another enigmatic update on social media, sparking further speculation about his identity as a transgender athlete. This comes on the heels of his announcement regarding his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft as a transgender individual.
The post included a throwback video of White showcasing a powerful dunk during his stint with the Canadian basketball squad, the Island Storm. He used this as a platform to address the criticism surrounding his transgender declaration.
“I’ve only been openly trans for less than 72 hours, and already there’s so much reaction,” White expressed on X. “All I want is to enjoy playing basketball with my fellow women during this feminine phase of my life! Why can’t people just support my journey?”
Following up on the post, White added a remark that read, “Now that’s what I call a transition!”
Hours after Enes Kanter Freedom announced on Friday that he was planning to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, White also announced that he would enter the draft next season.
On Friday, White told Fox News, “I’m transgender. I’m a woman… I identify as sometimes identifying as a woman for purposes of… professional basketball.”
During the weekend, White has been active on social media, posting about his intentions to enter the draft despite facing backlash from professional athletes, including Los Angeles native Robin Lopez.
White had a short-lived NBA career after being selected in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets.
In 2014, White appeared in three games for the Sacramento Kings, playing three minutes.
In his post-playing career, White has been involved in politics and is a Republican candidate in Minnesota for the U.S. Senate.
White and Freedom’s decision to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft came after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham told ESPN that “girls in sport” should “not have to go against biological men.”
