Brock Rechsteiner’s first year in professional football is encountering early turbulence.
The New Orleans Saints wide receiver, who is notably the son of WWE Hall of Famer Scott Steiner, has been handed a six-game suspension, as announced by the NFL on Thursday.
Details surrounding the cause of Rechsteiner’s suspension have yet to be disclosed.
Having joined the Saints as an undrafted free agent after the April draft, Rechsteiner faces tough odds to secure a spot on the 53-man roster. Nevertheless, he remains eligible for a practice squad position during his suspension period.
Despite the suspension, Rechsteiner retains the opportunity to partake in training camp and the Saints’ trio of preseason matches, providing him with valuable chances to compete for his place on the team.
Rechsteiner’s chances of making the 90-man preseason roster increased when former Patriots receiver Ja’Lynn Polk abruptly retired at just 24 years old.
Bryan Bresee’s season-ending knee injury also opens up an additional roster spot.
If Rechsteiner does not make New Orleans’ final roster, however, he could follow in his father’s footsteps in WWE, after hinting as such in May.
“I work out with [Bron Breakker] all the time back home. I go fishing with him a lot because he moved back to Georgia. He has really convinced me to, once I’m done playing football, to get into the wrestling business,” Rechsteiner told WDSU-TV.
“I want to play football for as long as I can, give it the best shot I can, but once I’m done playing football, I’ll get into it, for sure. I’ll be getting into WWE.”
Rechsteiner played four seasons with Jacksonville State and finished his career with 630 yards, 52 catches and seven touchdowns in 35 games.
His best moment came when he had an 85-yard touchdown reception on the second play of the second half in a win over Southern Mississippi.
