SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) —  U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are in San Jose conducting an operation on Sunday, Mayor Matt Mahan’s office confirmed in a statement sent to KRON4. The San Jose Police Department was notified that ICE agents were in the city.

Amid concerns within local Bay Area communities, Mahan said he hopes ICE is not targeting law-abiding San Jose residents but rather criminals. SJPD is not involved in ICE’s operations “in any way.”

“I sincerely hope that ICE remains focused on enforcement actions related to violent and serious criminals harming our city,” Mahan said. “Not neighbors who are contributing and law-abiding members of our community.”

It is unclear why ICE agents are specifically in San Jose. Mahan’s office was not able to provide additional details at this time.

“Our police department was notified today that ICE is carrying out an operation in San Jose. We do not have any additional details at this time. SJPD does not assist with or participate in these operations in any way. I sincerely hope that ICE remains focused on enforcement actions related to violent and serious criminals harming our city, not neighbors who are contributing and law-abiding members of our community.”

KRON4 is in San Jose to gather more information. We reached out to ICE for comment and did not hear back in time for publication.

Last week, a San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) student reported an encounter with an ICE agent Thursday, claiming to have been asked for identification on a Muni bus. An ICE spokesperson later told KRON4 that the student’s report was not true.

Since President Donald Trump’s inauguration last week, concerns within the undocumented community have risen. Trump’s first week in office included deportation efforts to crack down on illegal immigration.
