() On the same day mayors from sanctuary cities across the U.S. testified on Capitol Hill, the mayor of Santa Cruz, California, reaffirmed his position that local law enforcement will not assist federal authorities in removing citizens in the U.S. illegally from the city.
“We are a sanctuary city,” said Mayor Fred Keeley during an appearance on “The Hill on .” “We don’t apologize for that.”

The mayors of four major U.S. sanctuary cities defended their cities’ status in a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing Wednesday.

Boston’s Michelle Wu, Chicago’s Brandon Johnson, Denver’s Mike Johnston and New York City’s Eric Adams faced questions from Republicans, including committee chairman James Comer, who has vowed to hold the mayors accountable for their policies.
