KE IKI, Hawaii (KHON2) — The search for two teens on Oahu’s North Shore has extended into its second day with the Civil Air Patrol joining the search.

Loved ones identified the two as 18-year-old Joey Fujioka and 17-year-old Samantha Chun. Friends said the two Mililani teens did not return home after going on a date on the night of Jan. 17.

Multiple first responder agencies including the Honolulu Fire Department, the Honolulu Police Department and Ocean Safety responded to the incident around 10:45 a.m. the next day when a family member reported them missing.

The vehicle was also found at the beach entrance and their items were left on the sand.

A high surf warning was in effect at the time with wave heights up to 30 feet.

The Coast Guard later joined the search. Officials from the Civil Air Patrol’s Hawaii Wing were called in at 4:05 p.m. and joined the search on Sunday, Jan. 19.

As of now, Civil Air Patrol said those currently involved in the search include:

  • Aircrews from Civil Air Patrol’s Kauai Composite Squadron, Wheeler Composite Squadron
  • Maui Composite Squadron; and the Lyman Field Composite Squadron
  • Crews from the Honolulu Fire Department’s Battalion 5 and Engine Company
  • A boat crew from the Honolulu Fire Department Rescue Company
  • Air 1 and Air 3 helicopter crews from the Honolulu Fire Department
  • A drone team from the Honolulu Fire Department
  • Jet ski crews from the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department
  • The Honolulu Police Department

On Sunday, about 100 volunteers assisted in the search on land. Volunteers are welcome to search on land, and can meet at Ke Iki Beach at 7:30 a.m. to be briefed.

The family asks anyone with information or sightings to call 911.

Ocean Safety officials ask beachgoers to avoid the area for safety reasons and to ensure the search continues uninterrupted.
