Search Underway After Indonesian Passenger Ship With 240 Aboard Loses Contact in Java Sea

Indonesian search crews launched an urgent operation Sunday after a passenger ship carrying 240 people lost contact in the Java Sea.

The Virgo Transport 8 was sailing from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin on Borneo when communications with the vessel were cut off, the Associated Press reported, citing Indonesia’s Banjarmasin Search and Rescue Office.

Authorities said the ship was last detected about 92 miles from a pier in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province.

As of Sunday, officials had not reported any injuries or fatalities. The reason the ship lost contact was not immediately known, and authorities had not said whether weather conditions were complicating the search.
