During a briefing at the White House, Trump detailed an incident where a suspect, armed with numerous weapons, was intercepted by the Secret Service. One officer sustained a gunshot wound but was shielded by his bulletproof vest.

“The officer was shot at close range with a powerful firearm, and thankfully, the vest provided protection,” Trump stated.

As guests enjoyed a spring pea and burrata salad, waitstaff were readying the next course when security personnel swiftly entered the ballroom, instructing everyone to take cover. Reporters, dressed in formal attire, crouched near tables as wine spilled over white linens and glasses clattered in the rush for safety.

Armed guards burst into the room, rushing toward the dais where Trump was seated, while attendees either ducked or hid beneath tables. Amidst the chaos, someone in the audience shouted, “USA!”

Approximately 30 minutes after the security breach during the White House correspondents’ dinner, Trump announced on Truth Social that the “shooter has been apprehended.”

Both Trump and Vice President JD Vance were uninjured in the incident.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said charges will be filed shortly and that the nature of the charges would be obvious considering what had happened at the dinner. Blanche stressed that “the investigation is obviously ongoing and just started.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is examining a long gun and shell casings recovered from the scene, as well as interviewing witnesses from the dinner. He urged anyone with information to come forward.
