WASHINGTON — In a somber address, Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) expressed his remorse on behalf of the United States for the airstrike that reportedly devastated an Iranian girls’ school, resulting in the loss of 175 lives, including students and educators. This apology came after President Trump speculated that the tragic event might have been the result of an Iranian error.
“It was a dreadful mistake on our part,” Kennedy conveyed to reporters on Monday evening at Capitol Hill, as reported by NBC News.
“While other nations, like Russia, might commit such acts deliberately, we would never do so intentionally. It’s under investigation by the department now, and I sincerely apologize,” remarked the Trump supporter.
“I’m deeply sorry that it occurred. It was an unfortunate mistake.”
During a Monday evening press conference, Trump expressed uncertainty about whether the US military was behind the devastation that marked the war’s first day. This uncertainty arose after footage surfaced, seemingly depicting a Tomahawk missile striking the location, which is in close proximity to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facility.
“I haven’t seen it and I will say that the Tomahawk, which is one of the most powerful weapons around is used by — you know, is sold and used by other countries,” Trump told reporters.
“Whether it’s Iran or somebody else… a Tomahawk is very generic.”
When pressed on whether he was accusing Iran of flattening the school in Minab, just north of the Strait of Hormuz, the president added “I just don’t know enough about it.”
“I think it’s something that I was told is under investigation, but Tomahawks are used by others, as you know. Numerous other nations have Tomahawks they buy them from us. But I will certainly — whatever the report shows I’m willing to live with that report,” he said.
Trump said Saturday that “we think it was done by Iran because they’re very inaccurate with their munitions.”
“They have no accuracy, whatsoever. It was done by Iran,” he said.
Kennedy’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did the White House.
