The Senate on Saturday voted to advance Scott Bessent’s nomination to become the next secretary of the Treasury, putting him in line to be confirmed on Monday.

Senators voted 67-23 to tee up final passage on Bessent’s nomination. The final vote will take place Monday evening at 5:30 p.m.

Bessent previously advanced out of the Senate Finance Committee on a 16-11 vote. Sens. Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) were the lone Democrats to cross party lines on the committee tally.

If Bessent is confirmed, he would be the first openly gay Cabinet official in a Republican administration to be approved by the upper chamber.

The billionaire hedge fund manager and investor is widely expected to play a key role in the push by President Trump and Senate Republicans to extend the tax cuts enacted during Trump’s first term and to implement tariffs.

He will also be looked to as Trump and Congress work to increase the debt ceiling and fund the government coming up in the coming weeks and months.

Bessent’s cloture vote came during a rare weekend session, immediately senators confirmed Kristi Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security with bipartisan support.

Following Bessent’s expected confirmation on Monday, the Senate will turn its attention to confirming former Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) to become secretary of Transportation.
