Senate GOP confirms batch of 107 Trump nominees

Senate Republicans on Tuesday confirmed a second bloc of President Trump’s nominees, cementing 107 into place after changing the rules last month to grease the skids and overcome Democratic gridlock.

Senators voted 51-47 on the package along party lines.

“Before Senate Democrats shut down the federal government, they shut down the Senate floor – freezing the confirmation process. For months, their blockade created a growing backlog of qualified, bipartisan nominees. Tonight, Senate Republicans confirmed 107 of those qualified nominees and ended the Democrats’ confirmation blockade,” Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said in a statement.

“President Trump now has much of his team in place and ready to get to work for the American people,” he added.

Headlining the group is more than two dozen ambassadorial appointments, including Sergio Gor, a top White House aide, and former Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walker to become the top liaisons to India and the Bahamas.

The batch also includes the confirmation of more than a dozen U.S. Attorneys and reappoints Paul Atkins to serve as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) until 2031.

The move comes nearly three weeks after Republicans confirmed the first group of 48 nominees, all of whom were advanced through committee with bipartisan support.

Senate Republicans made the rules change following weeks of internal deliberations after Trump spurned a potential deal with Senate Democrats before the August recess due to what he deemed a high asking price.

The change allowed the majority party to pass nominees en bloc. Previously, Republicans were forced to process each nomination individually, with Democrats using the filibuster to make them use up all of the clock to get them across the line.
