JD Vance to visit Israel to help push second phase of ceasefire

The fragile ceasefire in Gaza is under significant pressure as Vice President JD Vance prepares to visit Israel. His visit aims to facilitate the progression into the second phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, according to an Israeli official.

During the initial phase, the ceasefire resulted in the release of 20 Israeli hostages, the liberation of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a partial withdrawal of Israeli troops from parts of Gaza. The Trump administration is now eager to advance to Phase 2, which includes the establishment of a new governance structure in Gaza, the deployment of a multinational peacekeeping force, and the disarmament of Hamas.

Significant challenges persist, particularly regarding Hamas’ obligation to return all deceased Israeli hostages. The ceasefire terms stipulate that Hamas must hand over all 28 bodies.

Over the weekend, Hamas released the remains of two additional hostages, yet Israel continues to express dissatisfaction with the slow progress. Hamas representatives blame the delays on extensive destruction in Gaza and the presence of Israeli military forces in certain regions.
