Thune hopes to vote Sunday on proposal to reopen government

On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) announced plans to introduce an alternative spending measure if Democrats choose to advance a continuing resolution passed by the House. Thune’s proposal would extend the stopgap funding solution and include three full-year appropriations bills, collectively known as a “minibus.”

Speaking to the press, Thune confirmed that the Senate is set to vote on this proposal Sunday afternoon. This comes after a day without voting activity on Saturday.

The specifics of the new legislation are anticipated to be unveiled early Sunday afternoon. This proposal is expected to incorporate regular appropriations for military construction, veterans affairs, the Department of Agriculture, and the legislative branch, which have already been negotiated with House appropriators. Additionally, it would fund the remainder of the federal government through late January.

Thune indicated his intention to replace the House’s continuing resolution, which is a straightforward bill funding the government until November 21, with the combined continuing resolution and minibus plan. A Senate GOP aide has reportedly referred to this combined measure as the “Criminibus.”

Thune said he will move to replace the House-passed continuing resolution, a “clean” bill that funds government through Nov. 21, with the combined continuing resolution and minibus, which one Senate GOP aide dubbed the “Criminibus.”

Republican senators gathered in the Mansfield Room on Sunday to munch on pizzas from Andy’s Pizza and leftover Halloween candy to discuss their next steps.
