The attack happened March of last year, a day after Brand was released from prison and was on parole.

Perkins was stabbed to death while trying to protect his pregnant mother in Edgewater.

During the trial, Brand represented himself and told jurors it was Smith who had the knife.

The jury ultimately found Brand guilty on all charges, including first degree murder and attempted murder.

In the weeks following Perkins’ death, two members of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board stepped down.

Jayden’s family has since called for changes to how domestic violence cases are handled in the state, with hopes of preventing another tragedy.
